Bulgarian Biodiversity Foundation (BBF)
Bulgarian Biodiversity Foundation (BBF) was established in 1997 with the support of the Bulgarian – Swiss Biodiversity Conservation Programme (BSBCP). Since its creation BBF has supported efforts of the Bulgarian Government and the Swiss Agency for Development and Cooperation in implementing sustainable management practices in 7 key regions of Bulgaria – Central Balkan, Dobrudja, Bourgas Wetlands, Ropotamo, Strandja, Eastern Rhodopes and Pirin.The BBF team has carried out numerous direct nature conservation activities such as Action Plans for endangered species, Management Plans for protected areas and preparing and submitting documentation for declaring and announcement a new protected areas – nature parks and Ramsar Sites.
Main areas in which operate our organization are:
- Enhancement of the protected areas network
- Supporting biodiversity community
- Creating models for education in conservation biology
- Increasing the public awareness
Within the Bulgarian-Swiss Biodiversity Conservation Programme in 2000 was created the first Nature Conservation and Information Centre for the north Black Sea cost as a part of BBF. This centre best known as Visitors Centre “Kaliakra” and is located in the village of Balgarevo near the cape Kaliakra. The interactive exposition at the Centre presents the most interesting inhabitans of the Black Sea and the last preserved steppes. The main directions in which works the Visitors Center ”Kaliakra” are:
- Promoting the natural and cultural-historical features in the region of Kaliakra Reserve and the Northern Black Sea area
- Supporting the environmental education in the schools
- Spreading information among the tourists about Kaliakra Reserve and the other protected areas along the Northern Black Sea coast
